About AREXPEDITIONS

AREXPEDITIONS attempts to capture the similarities between doing action research in a professional setting and traveling on an expedition. We use the expedition as a metaphor for the processes of action research. Action research, like an expedition, involves teams of people working together towards a shared goal. Like an expedition, action research is a journey. In the case of AR, this journey leads to professional development and social change.

Action research is the process by which professionals systematically study their own practices in order to affect change in both their personal and social well-being. The emphasis is on process and change. Like an expedition, the process can be strenuous, difficult, long-term and extremely rewarding. The journey will most likely bring surprises and unexpected outcomes. It is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. In action research it is best to be well prepared and have the support of friends and colleagues along the trail.

An expedition is an undertaking to reach a goal or destination. Like action research projects, an expedition requires preparation, appropriate gear and the skills necessary to make the journey. An expedition is most often undertaken by groups of people who rely on each other for support and safety. In action research the group helps guide us towards places we could not reach alone.

AREXPEDITIONS attempts to communicate the essence of action research; planning, questioning, methodological skill development, the continual rethinking of the journey, collaboration with colleagues and the realization of outcomes, some of which we might expect but others which are a results of the natural processes of the journey itself.

We invite you to participate with us in AREXPEDITIONS as we seek to communicate:

  • personal commitments and energy,
  • collaborative support and critique,
  • determination and effort,
  • intellectual and emotional commitments and
  • achievement and satisfaction.

In AREXPEDITIONS, we report action research results, strategies for conducting action research and invite you to participate in our on-going dialogue about action research. You will read about the results of AR including personal accomplishments and professional development, shared outcomes, social change and insight into professional practice informed by research.
