Types of Articles
Research Studies
Action research reports must reflect carefully designed studies on topics relevant to educators, public and private educational organizations, educational administrators and government officials. Authors are expected to provide a review of relevant literature, relate data to theoretical bases, address validity of results and conclusions and discuss the work in terms of the general action research community. There are 2 basic types of research topics acceptable for publication: 1) research focusing on the researcher, their professional development and the improvement of teaching and learning within individual professional contexts and 2) research about action research in which results focus on the process and outcomes of action research projects.
Theoretical Perspectives
Authors can base articles on various action research models (and the theoretical foundation for these models), the need for action research perspectives in modern research paradigms, action research and professional development, and issues specific to action research methodologies. Conclusions must be backed up by sufficient literature citations and original research as needed.
The Action Research Toolbox
Articles that relate directly to specific action research practices may be considered for the Action Research Toolbox. Authors are expected to use a literature review to provide justification for the practical applications, basis for generalizing results, and proof that the described approach is unique or critical to the field. They should also include a detailed description of the practice or program, and they must show data related to program evaluation. In the analysis, authors should show that the practice may be applicable to like institutions or situations. Although Toolbox articles are generally shorter and do not involve the scope of theory or research articles, authors must present a level of scholarship, including thorough documentation and rigorous scientific analysis, that is consistent with other journal publications.
Opinion Pieces
Thoughtfully presented opinion pieces will be considered for publication. These articles must include background information on the topic of contention and a noninflammatory presentation of an argument related to action research. Rebuttals may be accepted or solicited.
